Download the Boxes

Two Boxes with Signal Only

Here are the two new black box data sets. Both black boxes contain new physics signals without SM background, and are based on a total integrated luminosity of about 20 fb-1. Black Box A is designed to be somewhat easier.

Link to Blackbox B (signal only)

Both black boxes have been made with the L1 trigger settings. Since the L1 thresholds are set quite low, we expect that the triggers have a minimal effect on the new physics signal, and can be ignored in a first analysis.

Box with SM background -- ** early release**

Below is a link to an early release of a black box with SM background. The black box is generated with the high L2 trigger settings and is based on the small total integrated luminosity of 500 pb-1. It contains about 120k events, evenly divided over four separate gzipped files. Via the same link, you will also find 500 pb-1 worth of pure SM background, without signal. The pure SM background has been generated with a different random number seed than the box with signal. Our approach to generating the SM background is briefly summarized here.

Link to Blackbox C (with SM background)

In terms of integrated cross section, this data set corresponds to a very early stage of the LHC experiment, after about a few months of running or so. In an optimistic scenario, this may be enough for an early discovery of new physics. It is likely, however, that this early release of black box C does not yet contain a sufficient amount of data to identify the new physics signal. Even in this case, it is still useful to start studying the black box, and collect valuable information about the SM background from which eventually the signal has to be isolated.

Most of the structure in black box C derives from the effect of triggers. A careful study and thorough understanding of the effect of the various triggers in the L2 trigger menu is advised.

Box with SM background -- **upgrade to 10 fb-1**

Black box C, SM background plus signal with L2 trigger settings, is now available with total integrated luminosity of 10 fb-1. You will find it on the same

Link to Blackbox C (with SM background)

The data set is divided into four files of 2.5 fb-1 each. Pre-selection cuts have been used to keep the number of selected events to a reasonable level: about 4 x 100k = 400k events in total. All events in the sample satisfy the following selection cuts (MET = missing energy, HT=MET + sum of pT of all jets):

  • MET > 150 GeV
  • HT > 600 GeV (no leptons)
  • HT > 500 GeV (one lepton)
  • HT > 400 GeV (two leptons)
  • HT > 0 GeV (3 or more leptons)

The signal to background ratio in the sample is about 1 : 50.

In addition, via the same link, you will find 5 fb-1 of SM background without signal. This data set without signal is *not* independent of the data set with signal: it is a randomly chosen 5 fb-1 subset of the 10 fb-1 data set.

Black Box C in HPGS Format

HPGS is the Harvard group’s modified version of PGS3. To download or to learn more, follow the link to the HPGS wiki page.

Other Important Comments

It should be noted that the version 4 of PGS used to generated the above boxes is still in its beta-testing stages, and users might expect to see modifications of the boxes in the future as updates become available. To keep apprised of updates to the boxes, please put your e-mail address on the notification list. It is also advisable to check this Wiki for announcements periodically.

Note also that that this version of PGS uses kT jets, in contrast to previous versions, which used cone jets.

The Chameleon analysis package for use with Mathematica is also available. If you don’t have the very latest version, you can use the cleaning script with the -old flag to get the data files into a form that old Chameleon can handle.
